If you use district provided iPads, you may wonder what is the easiest way to transfer the photos and videos you captured using the iPad’s camera. I am happy to announce that the Google Photos app has been pushed out to all district iPads to allow backing up photos to the cloud for easy access from any other device.
What is Google Photos? Google provides this service and app for Free, with unlimited storage of photos up to 16 MP in size, and videos up to 1080P quality. For most users, this will handle all of their photos, and more.
 
How to configure the app:
 
  1. You will find the app on Page 2, under the “Utilities” folder.
  2. Open the app. Click get started. If you are prompted to allow Google Photos access to your photos, click “OK”. If you are prompted to allow the app to send you notifications, I recommend you click “Don’t Allow”. If prompted to leave notifications off, choose “Yes, leave off”.
  3. Here you will sign in with your school district Google account.
  4. Setup backing up the iPad’s photos and videos. Leave the default setting of on represented by the blue slider. Click “Continue”.
  5. Leave default setting of “High quality (free unlimited storage)”. Click “Continue”
  6. If you would like, take a moment to watch a few of the short demonstrations on how to use the app. When finished, click the “Arrow” button at bottom right, and then the “Check Mark” button at bottom right.
  7. It now opens to the “Photos” section of the app. You should now see all of the device’s photos listed here. If you have photos showing, you will notice the little cloud icon at the bottom right of each image and has a diagonal line through it. This means those photos are not set to be backed up.
  8. We turn on backup and sync by either swiping from left to right on the screen, or by clicking the button at the bottom of the screen named “Assistant”. We will see a notification that is telling us that “Back up and sync is off”. We want to turn this on. Click the “TURN ON” link. Now, click the grey slider button on the right of “Back up and sync”. It will turn blue showing that it is now on. Click the arrow at top left to exit this screen. Our iPad photos and videos are now configured to backup to Google Photos. If you have many photos or videos on the device, you will now see the backup progress at top of this “Assistant” screen. We see here that it says “Backup complete”, meaning all my photos and videos are now backed up in the cloud.
  9. We can look back at the “Photos” section and will find the cloud icon is now gone from the bottom right of the photos. This indicates these photos or videos are backed up.
  10. If we want to free up some space on the device, we can use the built in tool to delete this backed up content from the device. We tap the “Settings” button at top left, tap the “Free up space” option, tap the “Remove” button, confirm we want to delete these and click “Delete”, read the final message that says final steps. We now need to go to our home screen, open the “Photos” app, tap the “Albums” section at bottom, tap the “Recently Deleted” album, tap “Select” at top right, tap “Delete All” at the top left, confirm by tapping “Delete Photos”. You have now cleared this content from your device, and are ready to take more photos.
  11. Something to remember. If you know you will no longer be using iPads that have your Google account assigned to them, please make sure to remove the account from the Google Photos app and any other apps you have configured.

The iPad photos are no longer stuck on the device. Now that your photos and videos are backed up in Google photos, you have access to them from any device, including your computer, by going to “photos.google.com” or by accessing the apps page and clicking the Google Photos app. that we have pushed out to all district computer. There are many cool features that Google photos has to offer, and I encourage you to continue learning how to use it’s many features. I hope you enjoy it.
