Small Town Schools Nurturing Great Big Dreams!”

I am fortunate to be starting my sixth year as Superintendent for Red Bluff Union Elementary.  I have had the opportunity to work alongside an amazing team, through ups and downs, and without fail, I see the greatness that exists in our team, and in our students.  Our district’s motto is “Small Town Schools Nurturing Great Big Dreams!”  Let me share some of the dreams that have become reality in our district, and the dreams we are nurturing for our students.

In the past five years, we have continued to provide strong programs for students.  We have reconfigured the district so that our campuses better serve our student’s age groups, and so that we are better able to make meaningful connections with our students.  We have continued to increase academic achievement while reducing discipline and suspension rates for the district.  We have also implemented technology extensively, with 1 to 1 computing in grades 3 through 8, and many technology supports in our early Primary grades.  We also have one of the best Transitional Kindergarten programs in the region.  We have great schools, and we are proud of the work being done each day with our students and families.

Another thing that we have been able to do is to build critical partnerships that support our students.  We have an incredibly positive and collaborative partnership with the Red Bluff Police Department.  We are incredibly thankful for the G.R.E.A.T. officer at Vista, as well as their continued commitment to the safety of our students.  The Red Bluff Masonic Lodge has pledged more than $52,000 to support our Raising A Reader program in grades TK, Kindergarten, and First Grade.  The McConnell Foundation has provided grants for two of our sites that will make a long lasting impression and benefit to our schools.  We have partnered with Vision to Learn, a non-profit organization that provides eye exams and glasses free of charge to those students identified as needing help with their vision.  Finally, we are so very proud of the partnerships that we have with College Options and GEAR UP.  These programs provide us with outstanding support at Vista Prep for our college and career readiness activities.  Recently, Vista Prep has been honored by GEAR UP for the outstanding reconfiguration of the school on behalf of students that they have created a video that will be utilized state-wide and nationally to celebrate the progress of the school.

Looking forward, we will be “digging in” to the Common Core and the Smarter Balance Assessment.  Our students will be prepared to reach high levels of achievement, and to succeed on the new Assessment.  Our teachers and staff are working incredibly hard to find new ways to reach struggling students, and to enhance the educational program for high achieving students.  I am thankful for their efforts, and know that our district will provide an outstanding educational program for students.

During our journey, we have been able to bring many new staff members on to our team.  I would like to welcome each of them, and to challenge them to do what is best for students each day.  I am certain that our new principals, A.J. Rypka at Bidwell, and Rob Helmbold at Jackson Heights will be pivotal to our success, and will provide outstanding leadership.  Claudia Salvestrin, our new Assistant Superintendent, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the team and I am incredibly proud to work alongside her as a team to ensure amazing outcomes for students.

Thank you for being a part of the Red Bluff Elementary family, and for helping our “Small Town Schools Nurture Great Big Dreams!”
